Wrexham were forced to settle for a point at Cambridge United after a contentious penalty decision and a disallowed late goal left Phil Parkinson’s side frustrated in their push for automatic promotion.
George Dobson opened the scoring with a crisp low drive from 25 yards inside four minutes, but the hosts levelled before half-time when Liam Bennett tapped in after a scramble in the box. Just after the restart, Cambridge were awarded a penalty when Lewis Brunt was adjudged to have fouled Ryan Loft, and Josh Stokes converted from the spot. Sam Smith, a former U’s striker, nodded in Ryan Longman’s cross to make it 2-2 on 57 minutes.
Wrexham thought they’d won it late on when Eoghan O’Connell bundled home from a corner, but the goal was controversially ruled out for the ball allegedly going out of play beforehand. Parkinson was incensed, branding the officiating “bizarre” and accusing referee Thomas Parsons of “trying to make a name for himself.”
Despite the setback, Wrexham remain second in League One, three points ahead of Wycombe, who have a game in hand.
